5th annual WEAAD event

Professionals from many disciplines who work with the aging population met at the 5th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Event on June 15, 2017 at the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA).  The meeting was co-sponsored by COAAA and the Franklin County Office on Aging (FCOA).  The event brought awareness to elder abuse, examined new initiatives addressing elder abuse in Franklin County and fostered collaboration among different agencies and entities that work with older adults.

A distinguished group of speakers led informative presentations and sparked thought provoking discussions on several topics pertaining to elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Dr. Terry Kukor from Netcare began the day with his presentation, “Ripples on Gold Pond: Functional Capacity and Undue Influence in the Older Adult.”  Dr. Kukor discussed how older adults may be susceptible to undue influence (vulnerability to abuse, neglect and exploitation) because of their cognitive and functional capacity.

Sylvia Pla-Raith, Director of the Elder Justice Unite with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, focused on the issue of financial exploitation, types of exploitation, scams and how to determine if a Power of Attorney financially exploited a victim.

Charles Angersbach, Thalia Haddox and Christine Haenzel from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office presented documented cases of elder abuse and financial exploitation.

Jo Simonsen and Shelly Bell from the Ohio Domestic Violence Network talked about domestic violence and how it relates to elder abuse.

And the Interdisciplinary Review Committee (I-Team) presented a case review showing how different agencies collaborate to discuss complicated elder abuse cases.  The goal of the I-Team is to promote collaborative discussion to help with case planning.  The I-Team meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. at the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging.  Any agency can bring a case anonymously for an interdisciplinary conference to assist with case planning.

Each year, COAAA hosts the event which is centered on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).  WEAAD was launched in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. WEAAD is on June 15 and it is a day where communities around the world can host events to raise awareness of the critical social issue of elder abuse.
